The second annual Tradition Golf Classic – Vancouver Island was held last week at Royal Colwood Golf Club in Victoria, and while the weather wasn’t the greatest, actually it was lousy, raining most of the day, everyone had a great time. Royal Colwood is such a wonderful course, and we had it to ourselves. While the golf course was different (last year it was at Victoria GC) and the weather was different (last year it was sunny and warm), the results were the same.

Ron Berry and his group from the Nanaimo GC (Kevin Wilson, Ron Young and Greg Badger) put on a clinic for everyone else and took home top spot again. Berry shot 69 and Wilson shot 70, while the other two were 75 and 77 respectively) on a golf course that played long and soft. A great day of golf and friendship enjoyed by teams from Victoria, Nanaimo and the lower mainland, and we managed to raise some funds for the Golf House Society.

Our thanks to Royal Colwood for not only hosting the event but for doing a superb job of it on all fronts!

A field of 100 players teed off at Vancouver GC on Monday to enjoy each other’s company, to play a great golf course and to raise money to support the BC Golf House Society. This is the largest fundraising activity undertaken by the Society each year, generating over 25% of the annual revenues required to keep the Golf Museum and the Hall of Fame operational.
Two former BC Amateur champions, John Russell and Bob Mitchell, were in the field and joining the group for dinner was Dick Zokol, an Honoured Member of the Golf Hall of Fame of BC and soon to be going into the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame in July.
The Vancouver GC was a great venue, in wonderful shape and a true test, even from the white tees. Over a dozen women were in the field, a higher total than in recent years. The team of Matt Yasinchuk, Fred Yasinchuk, Allan Horwood and Mike Bains took home first place honours. The competitive aspect is downplayed in this event and for good reason. The event is to raise funds and enjoy the pleasure of the game.
On behalf of the Directors of the Society, we thank all those who participated and the hole sponsors who supported the event……….next year the Tradition Golf Classic moves to Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club.

Annual General Meeting of the Pacific Northwest Golf Association
Both Mike Riste, our Historian, and Barrie McWha, our Executive Director attended the 112th Annual General Meeting of the Pacific Northwest Golf Association at the beautiful and stately Inglewood Golf and Country Club in Seattle April 29 and 30.

Noted Golf Course Architect
Mike gave a presentation Friday to the Women’s Committee meeting talking about A.V. Macan, the noted golf course architect who was responsible for designing courses such as Victoria GC, Royal Colwood, Marine Drive, Shaughnessy G&CC and Inglewood along with many many more throughout the Pacific Northwest and as far south as San Francisco. Macan is the subject of Mr. Riste’s latest book, “Just Call Me Mac” in which he chronicles the life and work of this fascinating architect and accomplished player. The book is available on line through our web site at www.bcgolfhouse.com/shop-on-line . All book sales proceeds go to the Golf House roof replacement project.

BC Golf House Update
Barrie addressed the Board of Directors of the PNGA on Friday afternoon providing an update on activities and projects at the BC Golf House. The Evans Caddie Scholarship, the hickory golf program, the addition of two more fundraising tournaments, one in Victoria and one in Kelowna, and the roof replacement program at the Golf House were highlights of the report. The PNGA is a major Patron of the Golf House.

Both Barrie and Mike attended the Hall of Fame banquet Friday evening to see BC golfing icons, Margaret Todd and Doug Roxburgh inducted into the PNGA Hall of Fame. Saturday morning the Annual General Meeting was held followed by an afternoon of golf at Inglewood.
